The Canadian Everest 2008 team has successful test of complete satellite
communications hardware, video conferencing, and realtime echocardiography!
Demonstrating remote medical operations, a telemedicine and space medicine diagnosis
and treatment concept, is one of the research cornerstones of the Canadian Everest
Expedition.
Information and networking specialist, Craig Hare of HP, and Ottawa Hospital emergency
physician Christian Otto met with Dr. Mike Sandler, a research engineer and CEO
of Epiphan systems of Kanata, Ontario to do their first beta test of the Everest
telemedicine system. Using their mobile satellite ground station, the team was able
to transmit both realtime images of the heart, and realtime video via satellite
to the test centre where the team could monitor the incoming medical images and
watch the remote ultrasound session.
Epiphan systems is providing video compression hardware to assist in the transmission
of the images. While the Ontario Telemedicine Network will be assisting in directing
the connection to the Ottawa Heart Institute. See images for additional details.

dual video feed. Window one shows realtime cardiac echo images, while window two
shows a multitalented Craig Hare acquiring cardiac images. The dual display allows
the team in the test centre to direct Craig on correct ultrasound probe placement
to enhance the incoming images. The team was able to converse with Craig realtime.
See BGAN video for demo of the test session last Friday!
